Technical Fellowship

A largely autonomous group of experts responsible for representing the technical knowledge and interests of the Kusama and Polkadot networks.

What is the Technical Fellowship?

The Technical Fellowship is a group of engineers and researchers who help guide Polkadot and Kusama by reviewing code, validating technical proposals, and flagging risks. Fellows are nominated based on expertise and experience in building or maintaining the networks.

As part of the broader Polkadot DAO, the Fellowship helps ensure technical decisions reflect the needs of a decentralized community, not just one team.

How does the Technical Fellowship work?

Fellows review proposals submitted through Polkadot’s OpenGov system and provide technical opinions to help the community make informed decisions. They don’t hold voting power but serve as trusted advisors, giving signals on complexity, security, and feasibility. Their input can influence the prioritization and approval of protocol changes.

Why is the Technical Fellowship important for Polkadot?

Polkadot is built around decentralized governance, but not every voter is a protocol engineer. The Technical Fellowship helps bridge that gap by offering trusted, public-facing reviews of proposals. They help ensure upgrades are safe, scalable, and aligned with the network’s goals, without concentrating control in one team.

Benefits of the Technical Fellowship

  • Decentralized expertise: Brings together independent engineers to vet proposals and upgrades, reducing reliance on a single core team.
  • Transparency: Publicly signals technical confidence in proposals, helping the wider community make informed governance decisions.
  • Scalability: Enables faster, safer iteration as the network grows, especially important in an open system like Polkadot or Kusama.
  • Credible neutrality: Keeps technical guidance objective and ecosystem-wide, rather than tied to one project or company.
